Woman kicked out of home on Christmas Eve after making family watch Saltburn
Emerald Fennell’s controversial black comedy, “Saltburn,” proved to be a disastrous choice for one woman attempting to share the movie with her family on Christmas Eve. The film, known for its divisive nature, follows Oxford University student Oliver Quick (played by Barry Keoghan) as he becomes fixated on a wealthy fellow student (Jacob Elordi) and is invited to spend the summer at his family’s estate, offering a witty commentary on class interactions in English society.
However, “Saltburn” has gained notoriety for its explicit R-rated scenes, notably the ‘bathtub scene’ that requires a strong stomach. When the woman, posting under the username @applekaurr, suggested the film for a family movie day, it quickly turned into a calamity.
Her initial tweet on Christmas Eve read, “Movie day with the fam & my choice is Saltburn xo.” But less than half an hour later, she provided an update, saying, “It has been turned off & I’ve been told to go for a walk.” She shared a screenshot of a text from her mom, which demanded an apology: “When you come back I want you to apologize to everyone you d**khead.”
While the situation was undeniably humorous, many X users were puzzled by her selection for a family gathering. One commenter joked, “They should make you clean the tub as punishment. IYKYK.” Another noted, “Seeing it be near the top of [Amazon] Prime most-watched during the Christmas weekend like ‘oh they’re ruining a LOT of family gatherings,’ and I’m so glad to hear I was right.”
A third person shared their experience, saying, “Watched it as well today, mom joined me halfway through and told me I need psychiatric help for sitting through the entire thing.” The original poster later revealed that the infamous bathtub scene was the breaking point for her traumatized family.
Perhaps, for future family movie nights, a safer bet like “Home Alone” might be a more advisable choice.
